Every family deserves a village.
About Us

Every family deserves a village.

Brown Bellies & Babies exists to surround Black families with the education, resources, advocacy, and compassionate support they deserve — from pregnancy through parenthood.

Our Story

No family should have to do this alone.

Too many families are expected to navigate pregnancy and parenthood alone. We refuse to accept that.

Brown Bellies & Babies was founded on a simple belief: every family deserves to be seen, heard, and supported from pregnancy through the postpartum journey.

Too many Black mothers and babies continue to face barriers to healthcare, education, resources, and culturally responsive support. We exist to change that.

We believe that healthier beginnings are built when communities come together — not only during birth, but throughout the entire parenting journey.

Who We Are

A nonprofit dedicated to healthier beginnings — built around families, not programs.

Brown Bellies & Babies is a nonprofit dedicated to improving maternal and infant health by surrounding families with education, resources, advocacy, and compassionate support. We exist to strengthen families before, during, and after birth — so that no parent walks the journey alone and no baby begins life without a village.

Our Compass

Why we exist, and where we're headed.

Mission

Brown Bellies & Babies is dedicated to bridging health accessibility gaps in BIPOC maternal and infant communities. Our nonprofit strives to empower communities, promoting the well-being of mothers and infants through comprehensive support systems inclusive of education, healthcare initiatives, and mental health resources.

Vision

In envisioning the future, Brown Bellies & Babies aspires to create a world where every mother and infant, regardless of background, enjoys holistic well-being. Our vision is to build resilient communities through accessible education, comprehensive healthcare, and equitable resource distribution, fostering a nurturing environment where every family thrives with dignity and support.

Our Approach

The journey a family experiences.

We don't hand a family a list of programs. We walk beside them — and every service works together to create a stronger, healthier beginning.

Full-spectrum doula support

Continuous, culturally rooted care through pregnancy, birth, and the tender weeks that follow.

Childbirth & parenting education

Classes taught by Black educators who look like the families in the room — with childcare and meals included.

Essential baby & maternal resources

Diapers, pumps, safe sleep spaces, and recovery kits delivered with dignity, no questions asked.

Mental health support

Perinatal mood screening, therapy stipends, and peer circles for the anxiety and grief no one warns you about.

Community referrals

One warm handoff instead of forty cold phone calls — a navigator who stays until the need is met.

Birth-worker scholarships

Full-tuition funding that trains the next generation of Black doulas, lactation consultants, and midwives.

Our Belief

We believe…

Every parent deserves to feel heard.

Every baby deserves a healthy beginning.

Every family deserves access to compassionate support.

Every community deserves equitable maternal healthcare.

Our Values

What guides every decision we make.

Compassion Before Judgment

We meet families exactly where they are — with warmth, not conditions.

Community Over Isolation

No one navigates pregnancy and parenthood alone on our watch.

Education Creates Confidence

When families understand their options, they become their own best advocates.

Equity Requires Action

We don't just name disparities — we build the care that closes them.

Families First

Every decision we make answers to one question: what serves this family?

Hope in Every Beginning

We protect the joy of new parenthood as fiercely as we protect the science.

A community gathered around a family
Why Our Work Matters

When one family is strengthened, an entire community rises.

Supporting one family doesn't end with that family. A parent who feels heard becomes a parent who can advocate for others. A baby who has a healthy beginning grows into a child who arrives at school ready to learn.

We invest in parents today because we are investing in healthier generations tomorrow. Every resource we deliver, every class we teach, and every birth we attend is a thread pulled through the fabric of a community — and the whole cloth grows stronger.

Our Vision

We envision a future where every Black mother is heard, every baby has the opportunity to thrive, and every family is surrounded by a village of support from pregnancy through parenthood.

Jamecia Ledgister

Founder, Brown Bellies & Babies

For more than a decade, Jamecia has served families as a birth professional — walking beside parents through pregnancy, birth, and the seasons that follow. Her work has always been rooted in a deep passion for maternal and infant health and an unshakable belief that every family deserves to be seen.

She founded Brown Bellies & Babies to create the culturally responsive support she knew families deserved — care that honors who they are, where they come from, and what they need. Her vision is one of servant leadership: building stronger communities through education, advocacy, and compassionate care that lasts well beyond a single birth.

"I don't just want to help families welcome their babies. I want to help build the village that keeps them supported long after."
